Peter B. Mader
November 6, 1942 - August 3, 2017

Peter B. Mader, better known as Captain Pete, was born on November 6, 1942 in Siegsdorf, a small village in Bavaria.  Pete immigrated to the United States as a teenager and used his European soccer skills to earn a scholarship at Hartwick University.  He graduated in 1965.  After school, Pete married and raised his family in the Northeast, where he worked with Equitable Insurance in NYC as a Senior VP until he retired at 52.  Pete moved to New Smyrna Beach with Ivy, his wife of twenty-seven years.  Over the next 20 years they built a life together and made many dear friends.  He helped found the Turtle Mound Yacht Club on the lagoon where members came together almost every evening.  They held fundraisers for the greater community, potlucks and Sunday dinners.  Captain Pete was a treasured member of this family and he will be missed.  Encouraged by his friend Captain Bill, Pete got his captain’s license and joined Bill in Turtle Mound Boat Tours.  He took locals and visitors alike out onto the waters surrounding New Smyrna Beach.  Captain Pete knew the best fishing spots and where to find the dolphins, manatees and beautiful birds.  He took great care to make every trip memorable.  In his final days, his family treasured the fan mail and teary goodbyes received from many of his clients.  Pete had many roles in life; husband, father, stepfather, Opa, friend and Captain.  To his children and grandchildren, he shared his Alps heritage and his passion for hiking, skiing, soccer, camping, hunting and fishing.  His strong Bavarian spirit, love of everything pig and quiet but strong demeanor will remain in our hearts.  He is forever a guiding presence to his loving family.  For those close to him, there is comfort in knowing that Pete was happy doing something he loved: spending time on Mosquito Lagoon and its surrounding waters.  Captain Pete passed away in his home surrounded by loved ones on August 3, 2017.  Pete was 74.  His life ended far too soon due to complications from recent surgeries.  His family requests that donations be made to the New Smyrna Beach Fire Fighters Memorial Fund, 1400 State Road 44, New Smyrna Beach, 32168.  A celebration of his life will be held 4 PM Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Turtle Mound Yacht Club, next door to JB’s Fish Camp, New Smyrna Beach.
